Why doesn’t my wife want sex anymore?

There's a question I hear from a lot of married men: “Why doesn't my wife want sex anymore?”

Maybe you used to have a great sex life. There was chemistry, playfulness, and desire. When you initiate sex now, you hear, “I'm tired,” “Not tonight,” or “I'm just not in the mood.”

So you start wondering what's wrong. Is she no longer attracted to you? Is there someone else? Has having kids killed your sex life? Is something wrong with her libido?

Maybe. But before you assume the problem is happening in the bedroom, look at what happens long before you get there.

For many women, desire starts with feeling safe and connected. And that means the way you show up outside the bedroom matters a hell of a lot more than you may realize.

Think about what happens when you walk through the door after a brutal day. You're stressed. Your jaw is tight. You're irritated. Your answers are short. Maybe you're quiet, but it's the kind of quiet where everyone in the house can feel that something is off.

You may not think you're doing anything wrong. You're just stressed.

But there's a difference between having stress and being stress.

Having stress means something hard happened today and you're carrying it. Being stress means the stress has taken the wheel. And your wife can feel the difference.

She probably isn't consciously thinking, “His nervous system is dysregulated, therefore I'm not sexually attracted to him.” But her body may be saying, “I don't feel relaxed enough to open up right now.”

And if she's spending the evening managing your mood, walking on eggshells, avoiding certain conversations, or simply feeling like she has to take care of you emotionally, sex is probably the last place she wants to go.

Not because she's punishing you. Not because she's withholding sex. And not necessarily because she's stopped loving you.

Her body doesn't want to move toward intimacy when it's busy bracing.

This is where a lot of men get confused. You might think, “I'm not asking her to fix my stress. I'm just having a bad day.”

And you're right. You're allowed to have bad days. You're allowed to be frustrated, overwhelmed, exhausted, and pissed off.

The issue isn't that you have emotions. The issue is whether your emotions are running the room.

I'm not telling you to walk through the front door pretending everything is fine. That's not strength either. You can say, “Today was brutal. I'm carrying a lot right now. I need 20 minutes to decompress, and then I'm going to come back and be present with you.”

That's taking responsibility for your state instead of making everyone else absorb it.

And when you learn to regulate yourself before you enter the room, something changes. Your wife doesn't have to brace. She doesn't have to manage. She doesn't have to protect herself from your energy.

She can relax.

And when she relaxes, connection becomes easier. When connection becomes easier, desire has somewhere to come back online.

So if you're asking, “Why doesn't my wife want sex anymore?” don't only look at what happens in the bedroom.

Look at what happens when you walk through the front door.

Because the goal isn't to become a man who never gets stressed. The goal is to become a man whose stress doesn't run his relationship.

And that man is a lot easier to feel safe with.

And a lot easier to want.
